The Hendricks are Homeless

Things are sort of a disaster right now.

I’ve been hesitant to post this because things seem to change moment by moment.

We were supposed to close on our big green house yesterday. Instead of closing, we found out that this beautiful house is zoned commercial.

I’ll spare you the details…because there are many.

Right now....here's all we know:

We’re in my brother’s rent house in Bryan.

Initially, we didn’t want to ask him if we could stay here because we knew he was looking for long-term renters.

Then some precious girls we know ended up renting his house and said to us, “Hey…we’ll move our stuff in…never sleep there…go home to our parent’s houses and let you stay there until summer school starts.”

No way. How perfect is that?

So we came.

And from the moment we set foot on this street, our home has been invaded by wonderful children.

On the same day Danny was moved from our home, we came here, not knowing that God was about to begin healing our hearts the moment Danny left here.
Know how to make having one child leave your home less sad?
Fill it with lots of kids.
All we know is that we love these kids in this temporary neighborhood who have become such a sweet part of our lives this past week.

They run right over when they get home from school.
They've eaten dinner with us.

My yard has been full of kids ages 1-14.

I have seen them love me even though I thought it was impossible since all I seem to do when they are here is get onto them for the way they are behaving.

I love seeing my white kids surrounded by children who do not match them.

I love seeing these rougher, tougher kids love my little white boys.

That’s all we know.

We know we have loved it here where our yard is filled with children to love.

So many times, when situations blow up, you can say, "We should have... We could have..."

But you know what?

I cannot think of one single thing you could/should have done to prevent this situation.

Therefore, you just have to think that this has come from the hand of God. For your good.

How? Who knows.

When? Who knows.

When it's over, you'll look back and say, "Oh! THAT's what God was doing."

Meanwhile, try to breathe. I know it's hard to be without a nest.

My eyes are filled with tears of joy seeing those precious kids that I got to love on daily getting loved on by my very own family.

We are praying for you. Thanks for the reminder that there are no accidents when it comes to the Lord's plans. In the meantime, I'm thankful that you are there pouring into the hearts of these kids.

Seeing those pictures just make me really want to come over with my kids and play!!!
Sweet friends, my heart has been aching for you, and I am praying.
I have been asking the Lord for you "What are you doing here?" I can't see His hand right now, but I am fully confident we will look back and clearly see His plan unfolding...wonder what that plan is?
I just know that we will do whatever we can for you, our favorite homeless family! We love you!

Wow... I'm praying for you guys!

You guys are definitely welcome to come stay with me if you would like. And I'm totally serious... I will have a 4 bedroom/4 bath house all to myself come next week... and I don't think it would be a problem at all for you guys to just come crash in my roommates rooms. I have the only downstairs room too... so it would be like you have the whole upstairs to yourself.

I know that would probably be a last resort for ya'll... but, I really am serious! Just let me know.

Also... if ya'll need anyone to come chill with the kids while you guys go out lookin for places, just give me a call... and I really wanna come over and play with those kids in your hood!! Maybe saturday or something...

Update...

Ok...Aaron has been downtown all morning meeting with people and trying to figure out what we are doing.

He went down there with the goal of either figuring out what we need to do to be able to get the green house or to find a lot big enough for us to build a house in that area.

Where we are right now, in Jason and Lynsey's neighborhood has no homes for sale...just lots...and after talking to Stylecraft...a house the size we need would not fit back here.

Aaron went downtown today basically to say, "We want to move to the hood...and no one seems to be letting us. We need a plan."

After talking to a lot of people, he's feeling more confident about the green house. We still have some reservations, but pray we get clarity on those things today.

Right now, if we close after we get finalization on all the documents we need to live in the house as a residence, that will put us one month behind on construction.

Our goal was to have a normal stair case put in before we moved in and to have bedrooms upstairs by the end of the summer.

Once the students are back here in the Fall, our life goes from calm to crazy. If construction isn't finished before the students return, it might be Christmas or possibly next summer before we get full use of the house.

We are giving the owners two more contracts this morning to choose from.

Pray they accept.

And please pray for them. I can only imagine how stressed they are about this as well! We thought everything was good to go until Wednesday! They had no idea this was going to be an issue. My heart is broken for them! Pray God calms their hearts and gives them wisdom as well. I know neither of us want to manipulate God's plans in all of this...so please pray that all of us would honor the Lord, even while we are homeless and they are trying to sell their house and leave the state.

If they accept the contract...we will be moving down the street to the green house...in June if we're brave enough to live there while a huge stair case is being built or by July if we're not.

Please keep praying!

And keep sending us ideas of where to live in the mean time.

We might be moving in with you, Ryan!

Right after I clean all the bathrooms really well. A house with all boys? I can only imagine.

But I've got gloves and Clorox clean up. I'll be fine!

Ryan Price said...

Seriously... It's a really nice place... but chlorox will definitely be a must!! Besides... you live in a house full of boys already... no difference!

This is probably a dumb question. But I'm the king of those, so:
If the green house deal falls through, have you guys considered renting a house in the hood? Maybe even on that street where all those kids have fallen in love with you? Are there not rent houses that would be suitable for your family and your plans if buying does not become an imminent option? Just wondering.

Anyway, we'll be praying for you guys. Coming from a family who knows what it's like to be uprooted and having to live somewhere besides home for a bit, we definitely understand.

That's not a dumb question! But there aren't any homes for rent out here. This really is a relatively new neighborhood and doesn't have very many homes in general here...so no rent ones.

We're still praying the green one comes through. I think we'll know by tonight if we're needing to find a place to stay temporarily (as in a couple of weeks) or we need to go ahead and find a place to rent for a few months while we wait for a house to buy or build.

& I know it was no accident that I got to meet you today at the park! I feel so honored to have heard your story in person. I will begin praying for clarity for you & your family.

I need to come hang out, too, because I see I could learn some hair tricks for our sweet girl!

I can't wait to see this all come to fruition. Your attitude is such a good witness, and your transparency. Thank you for an amazing blog that we can all go to for iron sharpening iron messages and comments.

Nothing is done by accident.

As I got to explain to the boys dad that God works everything together for the good of those who love Him.

He is going to make this great and I look forward to watching God work in your family.

Friday Update:

I think we have a house!

I just signed an amendment to the contract on the green house moving the closing back a little.

Keep praying!

Until we close on Wednesday, nothing that comes up would surprise me after the week we've had!
